File Formats Exercise

PNG has the most data, therefore the most pixels and quality (And also looks the best). GIF has many types and sizes of saving, along with good quality ones. JPEG is second best.

File Formats, Graphics:

            What is the right choice for each file format?

·      Some compress files, etc.

·      Photos especially for JPEG

·      Lossy vs. Lossless: Some data can be lost for graphic file formats.

1.     JPEG lossy, loses data when resized.

2.     Lossless is bigger, but loses no data. (BMP, TIFF)

·      Web size graphics are all same, magazine graphics are higher quality; 300 dpi.

·      PNG can contain Alpha channels (A bit small), GIF too.

·      Each is different in its each ways

·      TIF: Tagged image format

1.     Lossless, not internet friendly, nice for printing

·      JPG: Joint Photographers Expert Group

1.     Lossy, can reduce 10:1 without significant compression artifacts.

·      GIF: Graphic Interchange Format

1.     Good for flat color. GIF combines RGB, reducing colors.

2.     GIF has no resolution data.

3.     Can has animation. Not good with printing.

4.     No standard frame rate.

Depending on Image, and presentation, there are different file formats.

Know Pixels:

·      Contiguous Pixels.

·      Non Contiguous Pixels is hard edges
